Do TransLoc Mobile App Users Represent Your Riders?

Rider demographics are important data for any transit agency.

You might be wondering who uses the TransLoc app and how this compares to your total rider population. In fact, you might be asking yourself right now "Are my users actually being represented within TransLoc's data?" To put these concerns to rest, we developed a method of determining the demographic composition of our app users.

Through characterizing our app users’ patterns of movement and transit-riding behavior, then combining that with census data, we can understand the demographics of our users and then scale that to approximate ridership demographics. We compared our estimates to on-board survey results, which show strikingly similar numbers.
